West Berlin was established in the 17th century by German immigrants who were looking for religious freedom. In 1851, West Berlin became its own municipality after it separated from Union Township to avoid being annexed into neighboring Somerville. For more than 150 years, this small town of about 500 people thrived on farming-related industries like milling lumber and processing silk.
In 1959 when the New Jersey Turnpike extension opened up just west of West Berlin, creating easier access between Philadelphia and New York City; commercial development followed suit which brought new residents to West Berlin as well as economic prosperity that continues today!
