How to File a Police Report in New Jersey

Accidents happen; it’s what you do afterward that matters.

When you get into a car accident, your first thought goes to you and your passengers. Then, you turn your attention to the other party and your vehicle. Many choose to forego contacting the proper authorities when the accident is minor. After all, you may be in a hurry, and it looks like everyone is fine.

However, the absence of a police officer at the scene, and your decision not to report the incident means you don’t have a police report to back you up when you need to file a personal injury claim in the future. Sometimes, the consequences of an accident don’t surface immediately, and injury becomes evident only after a few days or weeks.

Learn how to file a police report to secure evidence of the accident. This helps you avoid a “he said/she said” situation when you decide to file a personal injury claim against the party responsible for the accident.

The Different Ways to File a Police Report

The police report is typically made at the scene of the accident as officers investigate. In cases where the authorities aren’t called, you can file this report yourself.

File a Police Report In-Person

In New Jersey, you can file a police report at the police department. You simply need to find the police station nearest the site of the accident since they have jurisdiction over the area.

  1. Once you meet with an officer, you will be asked specific questions to get details on what happened. Avoid speculations and stick to the facts.
  2. After this interview, the officer will write up a report. They will give you a copy that serves as your evidence in insurance and personal injury claims.
  3. An investigation will be launched once the officer has filed the report.

Filing A Report Using Phone

If you can’t visit the police department, you can still file your report over the phone. Call the police dispatch office to get connected with an officer.

  1. Before starting, make sure to identify yourself and provide your details.
  2. After this, you can proceed with reporting the accident. Much like with an in-person report, you will need to provide as many details as possible.
  3. You will be informed when you can pick up the written report. In some cases, you will be asked to visit the police department for further questioning.

File a Police Report Online

Most police departments have websites where citizens can file a police report.

  1. Look for the link that applies to your accident and proceed with filling out the form.
  2. Make sure to double-check the details you’ve provided before submitting the completed report.
  3. Then, you can save a copy for your records. You may also print it out for your insurance provider or attorney.

A police report is essential in personal injury claims as it serves as hard evidence in court. After filing this paperwork, look for an attorney to represent you. Keith Zaid Law provides legal services to help you get the right compensation for your accident.
